WHITE

WHITE

WHITE is a neo-industrial project from Beijing, comprising Hang on the Box drummer Shenggy Shen and Carsick Cars guitarist and vocalist Zhang Shouwang. They recorded their debut self-titled album in Berlin in 2007 under the tutelage of Blixa Bargeld from Einstürzende Neubauten. Then went on to support Neubauten on their 2008 'Alles Wieder Offen' Tour, recordings of their performances were subsequently included in the AWO Tour Box. WHITE have also collaborated with the likes of FM3, Elliott Sharp, Alvin Curran and Manuel Göttsching.

Shenggy Shen aka Shen Jing is the former drummer with China's first all-female punk band Hang on the Box. Since then she gone on to establish herself a noise artist with solo-releases on Little Sound and Noise Joy (under the moniker Cosmic Shenngy). Coincidentally the track 47 Rockets (for Wan Hu) references China's mythical first astronaut and her interest in all things space related. Shenggy currently performs in the psychedelic drone duo Elephant House.

Shou Wang aka Zhang Shouwang is a founder member of the Chinese new music movement 'No Beijing' and the guitarist/vocalist in noise rock band Carsick Cars. They have performed at All Tomorrow's Parties and provided support slots for Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr. Shou Wang also took part in Glenn Branca's No.13 recording 'Hallucination City' for 100 guitarists.

After WHITE split up in 2009 Shou Wang continued the spirit of the project with WHITE+ in collaboration with PK14's Yang Haisong. In 2012 they released an album on Maybe Mars the following year they performed at SXSW in Austin Texas.

This re-release on Adaadat coincides with the 10 year anniversary of the recording. The album was originally released digitally in 2009 on OpenNote and on CD by Maybe Mars in China and Tenzenmen in Australia. This is the first time it has been made available on Vinyl, and it is due for release on May 26th.

"A metal file baked into the birthday cake. Just as Black Sabbath's blistering grind captured the drudgery of Ozzy's native steel-mill-town of Birmingham, England, White describes a Beijing struggling with ever-increasing globalization and mechanization. Rather than retreating to the comfortable grounds of rich musical history, or picking time-tested 70's songs to cover, White pushes forwards with its true colors run up the mast with a commitment to purity, a taste for the unknown and perhaps not just a little sense of mourning."
Alex Young (Consequence of Sound)

"Aspects of their first, self-titled album are familiar; pulsing rhythms are inherited from American minimalists like Steve Reich and Terry Riley, while Industrial rock thump and motorik groove betray a German influence. Yet the blend of melody and intuitive experimentalism is refreshing not only for its lack of cynicism, but also as a satisfying take on an established and well-mined set of ideas."
Lisa Blanning (The Wire)

"You get the feeling that White is crafting a physical space out of radiation and memes, waves of data from the abundant ephemeral seas crashing on the skeletal remains of industrialized society, and with each splash, a little organic material adheres and soon multiplies."
Alex V.Cook (Outsideleft)

"White's music has a positive, optimistic quality to it that is infectious."
John Kealy (Brainwashed)
